Our work

A connected approach to awareness and inclusion.

Dyslexia Project Africa builds understanding around the learner—in the classroom, staffroom, home and wider community.

The need

When dyslexia is not understood, support can be missed.

Across many communities, limited awareness can mean that a learner’s needs go unrecognised. Children may be unfairly labelled, overlooked or left without appropriate support.

DPA works to move the conversation from judgement toward understanding, inclusion and practical educational opportunity.

Six connected areas of work

Each part of a child’s world needs understanding.

DPA’s approach brings together the people and partnerships around a learner through school-based activity and community engagement.

01

Teacher training

DPA reports teacher learning in dyslexia and structured literacy, including training delivered with Nessy Learning. The aim is to strengthen understanding and classroom response.

02

Pupil awareness

School sessions introduce pupils to dyslexia in an age-appropriate way and create a shared language for understanding different learning experiences.

03

Parent education

Seminars and community engagement help parents learn about dyslexia and take part in informed conversations around learning.

04

Volunteer development

DPA trains volunteers in dyslexia awareness and advocacy so they can contact schools and support awareness sessions in their communities.

05

Inclusion

Awareness is a foundation for recognising learner needs and building more supportive, respectful school environments.

06

Partnerships

DPA works with schools, education organisations, specialists and community partners to widen access to awareness and learning.

How a school session can grow

Awareness can start a wider change.

The impact report describes a path from a first explanation to more informed conversations and a different response at school.

01

A session opens a conversation

Pupils and teachers are introduced to dyslexia awareness.

02

Understanding begins to grow

People around a learner have a shared language for the topic.

03

A school can respond differently

Greater awareness can influence how learners are understood and supported.

Teacher capacity

Teachers are central to supportive classrooms.

DPA reports training more than 1,110 teachers in dyslexia and structured literacy. Teacher learning is an important part of the organisation’s wider awareness work.

The report also describes training opportunities delivered with Nessy Learning.
